Overnight Oats: The Perfect Pre-Workout Breakfast

Overnight oats require 5 minutes to prepare and deliver slow-release energy for morning training. Here's the base recipe and 4 delicious variations for the week.

Overnight oats are arguably the most efficient fitness breakfast available. Prepared in 5 minutes the night before, requiring zero cooking, and delivering sustained energy from complex carbohydrates, overnight oats are the solution for anyone who struggles with morning nutrition before early training sessions.

Base recipe (1 serving): ½ cup rolled oats, ¾ cup milk (dairy or plant-based), 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup, 1 scoop protein powder or ½ cup Greek yoghurt. Combine all ingredients in a mason jar or container, stir well, cover, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, add your toppings and eat immediately or take to work. The oats absorb the liquid overnight and soften to a thick, creamy texture. Macros with protein powder: approximately 450 calories, 35g protein, 55g carbohydrates, 8g fat.

Flavour variations: Classic Blueberry - add ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Peanut Butter Banana - slice in ½ banana and swirl in 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter. Apple Cinnamon - dice ½ apple, add a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a tablespoon of walnuts. Chocolate Cherry - add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and ½ cup frozen cherries. Tropical - add ½ cup diced mango, pineapple, and a squeeze of lime. Prepare 5 jars on Sunday night for the full work week. Overnight oats last 5 days refrigerated, making them the ultimate meal prep breakfast for busy mornings.
